Does my child need any experience to join the marching band?
No. The Dos Pueblos Marching Charger welcomes dedicated students of all experience levels, from those who have marched for years, to those who have never set foot on a field in uniform. As long as you take pride in your performance and you are willing to work hard, the Dos Pueblos Marching Chargers welcomes you!

Does my child need to audition?
Audition are held in May for one of the bass drums, tenors and snare drum slots. Pit students do NOT need to audition.

Will my child be able to participate in other activities at the school?
YES! Instrumental Music students have participated in varsity sports, leadership, theater, Economic challenge, the Robotics team and numerous other clubs. Opportunites are limited during the fall semester when marching band, drumline and colorguard meets both 6th and 7th period daily. However, during the spring semester concert band meets only during period 6 so many students participate in numerous activities..

Will my child be able to keep up with homework and academic requirements? ABSOLUTELY! There is a wealth of research documenting the correlation between participation in school music programs, particularly instrumental music, and higher test scores and academic achievement. Many band students are on the honor roll, members of the National Honor Society and receive academic awards throughout the year.

Can I take Marching Band instead of P.E.?
Marching band fulfills Physical Education requirements for graduation, and is limited to one semester (fall) worth of PE credit per year.

Does the school provide instruments?
Dos Pueblos High School provides all the equipment and instruments required for the Drumline as well as tubas, baritones and mellophones. Many band students own their instruments but the school has used instruments available for students who may need them.

Will my child receive community service hours for volunteering in Band activities?
Yes. Students receive community service hours for loading/unloading the equipment truck, helping in the Car Wash, volunteering during the Jazz Festival, gift-wrapping at Borders and working at other fundraisers.

How will my child benefit from the band program?
No other activity in the school offers the combination of intellectual challenge, artistic expression and development, leadership, teamwork, school spirit, community service and socialization of the band program. It is a well known fact that students of the arts continue to outperform their non-arts peers in school and on tests such as the SAT. According to a questionaire by the College Entrance Examination Board, in 2006, SAT takers with coursework/experience in music performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and 43 points higher on the math portion than students with no coursework or experience in the arts. Scores for those with coursework in music appreciation were 62 points higher on the verbal and 41 points higher on the math portion. How much does it cost to be in one the instrumental music program?
Cost range from $200 for the Jazz Band Program to $500 for the Marching Band. For more detail, please see the Band Booster Financial Responsibilities webpage. Scholarships are available for students facing financial hardship.

Can my child letter in marching band, drumline and/or colorguard?
Yes. Participation in one of the programs for two years will earn your child a letter.
