Dos Pueblos offers two jazz classes, Advanced
Jazz (A) and Beginning Jazz (B) that teach a broad range of jazz
music and jazz playing techniques including reading jazz rhythms,
jazz phrasing and articulation, and improvisation. Under the leadership
of Band Director Les Rose, the students are exposed to various styles
of jazz music including swing, Latin, jazz-rock, and ballads. Serious
classic big band jazz literature is learned and performed. Students
gain a historical perspective of the music that they are studying
and the instruments they play, including a working knowledge of
famous musicians and their particular instruments. Beginning jazz
students can progress to an advanced level with the goal of successfully
auditioning for the school's advanced jazz ensemble. Both classes
participate in school concerts and performances.
The Advanced Jazz Band is a sought-after
swing dance band, professionally paid since 2006. Each year, the
band performs at various out-of-town jazz festivals and competitions.
Dos Pueblos won first place at the prestigious 2009 Reno Jazz Festival.
The band also took first place at Cuesta College 2009 Jazz Festival.
In 2007 they were guest performers at the Next Generation Jazz Festival
in Monterey, CA. They also performed at the Jubilee by the Sea in
Pismo Beach, a traditional jazz festival for professional musicians,
in 2007 and 2008. The band was the only high school ensemble invited
to play at this event and received standing ovations. Additionally,
Dos Pueblos hosted its 41st Annual Jazz
Festival on March 6, 2009. Locally, the band has regular gigs at the Elks Club, including several special events such as the Annual Holiday Party, Sweetheart’s Ball, and Spring Swing where they have an enthusiastic and appreciative swing dance audience. The band specializes in Big Band music of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Other performances included an afternoon at SOhO Restaurant where the band received a scholarship from the Henry Brubeck Memorial Scholarship Fund from the Santa Barbara Jazz Society in 2008. Winter and spring concerts are also held in the Dos Pueblos Performing Arts Center in conjunction with the school’s orchestra and concert band. |
