The Dos Pueblos Jazz Bands offers both Intermediate and Advanced level opportunities. Competition season begins during the spring, with Dos Pueblos High School hosting one of many Jazz Festivals in the Southern California region. The bands will also be showcased at concerts in December and May.
Beginning Jazz is a continuation of instrument studies from junior high, with heavy emphasis in the literature, history and theory of jazz. There is no audition required and it is open to all wind and percussion instruments. Beginning jazz is not beginning instrument and most students are continuing their junior high band journeys.
Advanced Jazz is the only audition-only program in the department. Students audition for Advanced Jazz in late May, and are accepted on an ability basis, with each section of the group capped at 5 players and the rhythm section capped at 2. Instrumentalists who are eligible to audition are saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drum set, piano, bass, and guitar. Advanced Jazz is a year-long course with a more rigorous performance schedule and high level music.
